Have read in forums of slopes being 1hour+ away from people, especially overseas, here in NZ its not far, i am lucky i live 10 mins away from a slope(i just had a fly this afternoon), all other slopes are within 1hours drive, so i get to fly alot. At the moment i only slope fly but am looking at getting a light wind/thermal ship. How far do you others out there have to travel?
i drive a mile and hike up 20-25 minutes. can see my slopes from front door. if i get to fly 2x a week i'm very happy with that! 3x occasionally. for a month it hasn't stopped raining though. extremely unusual weather:(
about to maiden a parkflyer to teach my kids -- the superfly. may get to fly more often!
currently live very close to my field of flight, which is approximately 15 minutes from my house now flying one day a week, almost always flying alone and I can tell you what is best
I typically fly two times a week on average. I live 4 minutes from or club flying field in Sparta, MI. MSL (Michigan Soaring League) contests rand from 4 minutes to 3 hours distant.
We do mostly thermal duration flying so the recent high winds have been a negative for me.
My friend and I have a flying field about 2 miles from my house. It's wonderful! We have a 600 foot x 80 foot runway with a commanding view. In the glider world, I fly mostly electrics. Our field is at the base of a mountain, so I do what I guess would be called reverse slope soaring. I play the updrafts off the side of that mountain from the bottom. The good thing, I can always get back down to the runway. The bad thing, if it's a 'really' good day, one has to be very careful to not lose the bird over the mountaintop.
I normally fly 3 to 4 times per week through the warmer months, mostly depending on weather. This year there has been a lot of rain. In the colder months... well, maybe 4 times per month or so. My club is about 45 minutes away. I fly there maybe an average of 1.5 times per month.
